UUAHP Steering Committee Meeting
12-5-00

Attendees: Jo Haberman (presiding), Barbara Weatherhead, Nan Corliss, Bob Aderhold, Mary Kaye Peterson, Lois Hamilton, Lynnanne Warren, Carolyn (a visitor)

1. We made introductions and approved minutes from the prior meeting.
2. A Treasurer's report was made - no change in the balances; amounts were the same as reported at the prior meeting.
3. The policy committee reported on plans for the conference. Jo and Bob presented a refinement of the theme for the conference and an outline for the Saturday session. The outline generally was accepted with refinements. Here is what was decided - persons with follow-up responsibility are identified in bold:
" The conference theme - Influencing MN Affordable Housing Policy Amid 2003 Realities.
" There will be a Friday evening keynote and a Saturday morning event that goes to mid-day. No lunch.
" Friday evening will look like this:
" Friday event registration is 6:30 to 7:00; the speaker will talk from 7:00 to 8:00; reception will be from 8:00 to 9:00; reception will feature wine, cheese, etc., and music. Barb Weatherhead will line up the food and libations - she will contact Jan Robin of FUS or Jeanie Inglehart of White Bear. Music is to be provided either by a jazz group from First Universalist, if available, if not, maybe a folk band. Jo Haberman is responsible for music.
" Our Friday speaker, Jim Scheibel, Executive Director of Project for Pride in Living and former mayor of St. Paul. Scheibel will address the conference theme, provide some context regarding the depth of the problem, and presumably tie his talk in with his work at PPL.
" Project for Pride in Living, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization assisting low and moderate income people to become self-sufficient by addressing their job, affordable housing and neighborhood needs. The agency is active throughout the Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota metro area.
" We will use the opportunity to collect a "free will" offering for a PPL project that is consistent with the mission of UUAHP - addressing the affordable housing needs of those at 30% of metro-median family income.
" Jo Haberman will introduce Scheibel - Jo Haberman will also work with him on developing the theme and identifying a project for which we will be raising funds.
" The Scheibel presentation will be followed by a
" Saturday morning will look like this:
" Registration and refreshments (tea, coffee, juice, bagels, etc.) - 8:30 to 9:00 AM
" Welcome by FUS minister or surrogate - 9:00 to 9:05.
" UUAHP overview and annual report - 9:05 to 9:15. Bob Aderhold will prepare the annual report.
" Early session - This session will 9:15 to 10:30 (1hr 15min) - Focus is on affordable housing policy issues at the city, regional, and state levels. Will include presentations and discussions with our key partner organizations working at these levels, respectively, MICAH, Alliance for Metro Stability, and Minnesota Housing Partnership. Panelists will address the questions: What are you working on? What do we need to know to make a difference? What do you need to do to make a difference? UUs that have worked with these organizations will participate too. Jo Haberman will work MICAH and AMS. Bob Aderhold will work with MHP.
" Break - 10:30 to 10:45 (15min)
" Late session - 10:45 to 12:00 (1hr 15min) - This session will include legislators who will be invited to participate. Legislators will participate in a role play in which they are cast as activists and the activists are cast as legislators. Jo Haberman will flesh this concept out and work with Nan Corliss to invite the legislators. We discussed several possibilities - Dick Cohen, Barb Sikora, Karen Clark, Michael Paymar, Matt Entenzza. (Bob's comments: Can we fill the entire period with this? Would we want to? Could we split the session - have a panel of the legislators discuss these questions for half the time - What opportunities will there be, where are the opportunities to influence, how do we influence. For the rest of the time, do role play.)
" Wrap up 12:00 - Ron Dueltgen or other willing person.
" Mary Kay Peterson and Lynnanne Warren will work on Saturday refreshments.
" Other To Do Items:
" Nail down MC for both Friday and Saturday. This will be Ron Dueltgen, providing he can be cajoled into it - Jo Haberman.
" Nail down FUS minister or a ranking surrogate to welcome participants to FUS on Friday and Saturday - Jo Haberman.
" Publicity - including, an article for congregational newsletters, an insert for bulletins that can be used on 2 or 3 Sundays in January, an agenda page for the folders that will be provided at the conference, and possibly a few posters for some of the congregations. Publicity pieces should have reference to UUAHP website and directions. Bob Aderhold and Ron Dueltgen.
" Conference folders with a variety of background materials, etc. and registration materials for tables at the entryway. Should include some kind of sign up sheet with options for people that want to participate. Barbara Weatherhead and Nan Corliss
" Registration coordinator - Lois Hamilton (This will involve taking names and providing name tags.)
" Set up of tables & chairs & sound systems for day of event - Bob Aderhold and a volunteer.
" Have sign-up materials for the MHP Day on the Hill. Bob Aderhold
" MUUSJA materials - Jo Haberman
4. Other policy committee items were as follows:
" Discussed the Trust Fund campaign in Minneapolis that is being led by the Minneapolis MICAH chapter. Jo noted reminded us about the December 16 Community Development Committee meeting at the Minneapolis City Council where the Trust Fund ordinance gets its first hearing. Bob Aderhold will put out an announcement to the UUAHP list and to the FUS Social Concerns list.
" Jo gave a report on MUUSJA (Metro UU Social Justice Alliance) - she noted that its next meeting is on Sunday, December 15, 7PM at First Unitarian Society. An hour of that meeting will be devoted to publicity - the best way to communicate with our congregations.
5. Nan Corliss reported for the Hands-on Committee. She noted that the upcoming Habitat days for Heritage Park will to be posted on the Congregations Building Community web page when they come available and that those wishing to participate will be able to sign up on the site. http://www.saintolaf.org/CBC.htm
6. We discussed the need for a new Funding Committee chair. Lois Hamilton volunteered and was unanimously elected. Other funding news discussed was the fact that First Universalist Foundation is looking for a home for some more money. In addition, it wants a status report on what UUAHP has done with the money that it has contributed thus far to UUAHP when it meets on Feb 24, 2003.
Next meeting January 2, 2002 will be held at 6:30 PM at First Unitarian Society, 900 Mount Curve Avenue, Minneapolis
